How to Care for Your Saree: Complete Guide for Banarasi, Chanderi & Kota Doria

A fine saree is an investment — and with the right care, it can last generations. Whether you own a heavy Banarasi silk, a delicate Chanderi, or a breezy Kota Doria, each fabric has its own needs. This guide covers everything you need to know about washing, drying, storing, and maintaining your most treasured sarees.

Banarasi Silk Saree Care

Banarasi sarees are woven with real or art silk and often feature intricate zari (gold or silver thread) work. They require the most careful handling of all saree fabrics.

Washing

  • Dry clean only for pure silk Banarasi sarees — this is the safest option.
  • If hand washing at home, use cold water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent (avoid regular soap or detergent powder).
  • Never wring or twist — gently squeeze out excess water.
  • Do not soak for more than 5 minutes as prolonged soaking can damage the zari.

Drying

  • Lay flat on a clean cotton cloth in the shade — never dry in direct sunlight as it fades the silk and weakens the zari.
  • Never tumble dry or use a dryer.
  • Avoid hanging when wet as the weight of the wet fabric can stretch and distort the weave.

Ironing

  • Iron on the reverse side using a low-heat silk setting.
  • Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree to protect the zari.
  • Never iron directly over zari borders or motifs.

Storage

  • Wrap in a soft muslin cloth — never store in plastic bags as silk needs to breathe.
  • Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks.
  • Place neem leaves or silica gel sachets in the storage area to repel insects and moisture.
  • Store away from direct light to prevent colour fading.

Chanderi Saree Care

Chanderi sarees are known for their sheer, lightweight texture and subtle sheen. They are woven from a blend of silk and cotton, making them slightly more forgiving than pure silk but still requiring gentle care.

Washing

  • Hand wash in cold water with a gentle fabric wash or baby shampoo.
  • Wash separately — Chanderi can bleed colour, especially darker shades, in the first few washes.
  • Gently swirl in water; do not scrub or rub the fabric.
  • Rinse thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear.

Drying

  • Gently press between two dry towels to remove excess water.
  • Dry in the shade on a flat surface or hang carefully on a wide hanger.
  • Avoid direct sunlight to preserve the delicate sheen and colour.

Ironing

  • Iron on a low to medium setting while slightly damp for best results.
  • Iron on the reverse side to protect the surface sheen.
  • Use a pressing cloth if ironing on the right side.

Storage

  • Fold neatly and store in a muslin or cotton bag.
  • Avoid heavy items on top as Chanderi can crease easily under pressure.
  • Air out every 3–4 months to keep the fabric fresh.

Kota Doria Saree Care

Kota Doria sarees from Rajasthan are woven in a distinctive square check pattern (khat) using cotton and silk. They are lightweight, breathable, and relatively easy to care for — making them a great everyday saree.

Washing

  • Hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent.
  • The cotton content makes Kota Doria more washable than pure silk, but still treat it gently.
  • Avoid machine washing as the delicate weave can snag or distort.
  • Rinse well to remove all detergent residue.

Drying

  • Gently squeeze (do not wring) and hang to dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area.
  • The fabric dries quickly due to its open weave — a major advantage in warm weather.

Ironing

  • Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp.
  • The square check pattern can be gently straightened while ironing for a crisp finish.

Storage

  • Fold and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Can be stored in a cotton bag or simply folded in the wardrobe.
  • Check periodically for moisture, especially during monsoon season.

General Saree Care Tips for Every Fabric

  • First wash test: Always test a small, hidden corner of a new saree for colour bleeding before washing the full piece.
  • Stain treatment: Treat stains immediately by blotting (never rubbing) with a clean cloth. For stubborn stains, take to a professional dry cleaner.
  • Zari care: Wrap zari borders in tissue paper before folding to prevent tarnishing.
  • Monsoon storage: During humid months, add extra silica gel sachets to your saree storage and air them out more frequently.
  • Rotate your sarees: Wearing and airing your sarees regularly actually helps keep them in better condition than storing them untouched for years.
